The Importance of Automobiles
Automobiles are a major part of modern life. They provide us with the ability to travel to work, visit friends and family, shop for food and other necessities, get medical care and so much more. However, automobiles can also be very dangerous and pollute the environment. The design of a car can have a great impact on the safety and comfort of the passengers. It can also affect how the vehicle handles on roads and other surfaces. Various branches of engineering are concerned with the design and manufacture of cars.
The history of the automobile began with steam, electric and gasoline powered vehicles competing for decades. Eventually, the gasoline internal combustion engine took dominance. It allowed for faster, more comfortable travel. This revolutionized the way we live, providing access to jobs and services in cities and suburbs that were never before available. It was around this time that North Carolina got its first auto factory, in 1914.
Exactly who invented the automobile is a subject of much debate. Some credit Karl Benz of Germany, who created the first car with a four-stroke, liquid fuelled engine in 1885/1886. Other engineers and inventors made improvements to his designs.
In the United States, businessman and engineer Henry Ford introduced mass production in 1906. This enabled him to create the Model T, a car that could be afforded by middle class families. He also pioneered assembly line techniques to make cars more affordable. This helped the automobile become the primary form of passenger transportation in America.
Today, there are over 1.4 billion automobiles in operation worldwide. They cover over three trillion miles per year, with most of this distance being driven in the United States. The automotive industry is a large and complex one with many subsystems of specialization. These include the engine, transmission, chassis, wheels and tires, aerodynamics, and safety systems. The design of a car depends on its intended use. For example, off-road vehicles need durable, simple systems with high resistance to severe overloads and extreme conditions. In contrast, automobiles designed for highway use require more passenger amenities and optimized high-speed handling and stability.
Safety is a crucial aspect of automobile design. A car must be able to withstand a collision without serious damage to the passengers. This requires strong and lightweight construction materials. It also involves balancing the weight of the vehicle, its height and centre of gravity, and how the suspension is configured.
The human factor is important as well. The driver must be trained and capable of reacting quickly to changing road conditions. Accidents can occur when drivers are distracted, tired or under the influence of drugs. Some issues related to the automobile’s design are a concern to environmentalists, such as exhaust emissions and the destruction of natural landscapes for the creation of roads and parking areas. Also, the cost of automobile ownership can be considerable, including repair, maintenance, insurance, gas, depreciation, borrowing costs and taxes. It can also be difficult to find places to park.
